FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) - Federal workers about about to miss a second pay check because of the partial Federal Government shutdown.

Air traffic controllers and TSA agents are still required to work because they are considered "essential" employees.

"It is really starting to weigh on people's minds, and people aren't sure what they are going to be able to do to make it through this," said Jordan Hefner, Fort Wayne Air Traffic Controllers Association president.

Hefner said people are starting to make tough decisions.

"Like anyone in America would go through like this, once income stops coming in for you, it really makes life decisions tough for you," he said.

The Federal Government ran out of funding back on December 22.

That means federal workers are deciding what bills they will pay.

President Donald Trump and Democratic leaders are using the shutdown to argue about building a wall along the U.S./Mexico border.

Hefner feels that conversation can wait.

"Open up the government. That's the biggest thing. Open it back up, get everyone taken care of. Not just the federal employees, but all the other people across the country," he said.

Hefner said air traffic controllers and TSA agents in Fort Wayne aren't calling in sick like other parts of the country.

However, some are starting to look for new jobs.

"Why are we being forced to do this when no one else in the country, in any other job, would put up with this type of treatment, 'You still have to come into work today, but we're not going to pay you for it.' It's completely unacceptable," Hefner said.

Hefner said the best thing people can do write representatives in Washington, D.C. to end the shutdown.
