FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) - The United States and China continue to stand off in a trade war.

Last week China's state media suggested China's rare earth resources could be used as leverage against the U.S.

However, local farmers are hoping an agreement can be reached soon.

"We have a huge carryout of soybeans and corn from last year because we just don't have the markets right now," said Tom Miller, Waterloo farmer.

China is one of the largest buyers of U.S. soy beans and pork.

While President Donald Trump tries to negotiate a new trade deal with China, both countries are imposing tariffs.
this is leaving farmers in northeast Indiana stuck with a surplus of crops.

"We have to rely on our politicians to make sure we have a home for all of our crops," said Miller.

Congressman Jim Banks acknowledges this trade war is affecting people here in northeast Indiana.

However, he said these negotiations, which have been going on for a while now, are needed.

"The trade war has a significant impact on northeast Indiana, but so do the trade practices of China, which for far too many years we have done nothing about," said Banks.

Banks said he can see a deal being reached soon.

"That will hold China more accountable, allow us to keep growing this economy which is growing at a substantial rate already," said Banks.

President Donald Trump has said he will continue negations with China until he feels a fair deal has been reached.
