FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — An investigation is underway after a body was pulled from a river downtown Tuesday morning.
Just after 8:40 a.m. Tuesday, first responders in Fort Wayne responded to a water rescue in the Maumee River near the area of Spy Run Avenue and Lafayette Street downtown.
The Fort Wayne Police Department said first responders from several local agencies began searching the area for the body using drones, watercraft, and by foot.
Authorities said the body of a man was spotted by a drone on the southside of the Maumee River tangled up in underbrush.
The body was pulled from the river by officers with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and a rescue team from the fire department.
The body was transported to the Northeast Indiana Forensic Center by Midwest funeral home where an autopsy will be performed.
The victim is expected to be identified by the Allen County coroner at a later date.
This incident remains under investigation by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
