FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) -- East Allen County Schools approved their fall 2021 reopening plan Tuesday evening.
The vote was almost unanimous, 6-1.
“The one thing about this board, even when we don’t have a unanimous vote, once that vote is cast we’re all in support of the plan,” School Board President Todd Buckmaster said.
There are three key points to the plan:
- Face coverings are optional in school.
- COVID-19 vaccinations are not required for students or staff.
- Parents are allowed back in the buildings.
“I believe our goal should be as normal as possible school year approach. This means volunteers allowed in buildings, the right to assemble and be protected, and face masks optional no questions asked,” said a concerned EACS parent at the podium.
One caveat is that masks will still be required on the buses.
Any transportation from the school district will require a mask -- they'll be provided if students don't have one.
“We do listen and we do always try to find common ground. And I hope parents would say the same,” Buckmaster said.
As Allen County moves from blue to yellow advisory level on Wednesday, the board says they’ll be closely monitoring data.
