Garrett, IN-The Indiana State Police are investigating an Officer involved shooting which occurred last night in the 400 block of South Hamsher Street in Garrett IN, at approximately 8:20 pm. A DeKalb County Deputy initiated a traffic stop for an equipment violation and he was assisted by a Garrett City officer.
During that traffic stop gunfire was exchanged with the suspect driving the vehicle. That gunfire resulted in non-life threatening injuries to the DeKalb County Deputy but did require him to be hospitalized overnight. He was released from the hospital this afternoon. He will be on administrative leave until further notice, which is standard procedure in officer involved shootings. The Garrett City Police Officer was not injured and will also be on administrative leave.
The suspect in the case suffered gunshot wounds and is hospitalized in critical condition.
Interviews with all officers involved is expected to be completed within the next 72 hours. At the conclusion of the investigation the DeKalb County Prosecutors office will be reviewing all the information submitted for consideration for any charges being filed.
GARRETT, Ind. (WFFT) - The Indiana State Police is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Garrett.
The incident started around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday as a traffic stop initiated by a Garrett Police Department officer in the 400 block of Hamsher Street.
A DeKalb County Sheriff Deputy arrived to assist with the stop.
Investigators are working to determine what happened next, but it led to someone shooting a gun.
The deputy and suspect were hit.
ISP said the deputy is expected to be okay.
The suspect's condition was unknown as of midnight.
Garrett Police Department, Auburn Police Department and the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department were also helping on the scene.
No one else was hurt in the incident.
This is the third officer involved shooting in northeast Indiana this year.
