ANGOLA, Ind. (WFFT) — An early morning collision on a highway in Steuben County left one person injured Thursday and police believe the weather conditions played a role in the crash.
Just after 5:30 a.m. Thursday, Steuben County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision in the area of U.S. Highway 20 and County Road 500 West in rural Jackson Township.
Deputies reported that 25-year-old Jamie Cassabon of Angola was traveling eastbound on U.S. 20 by the Steuben County Airport.
Investigators said Cassabon merged into the westbound lane of U.S. 20 to go around a garbage truck that was stopped and collided with a westbound car driven by 60-year-old Orlando Mendez of Angola.
Deputies said Mendez’s car went off the north side of the road and came to a rest in a ditch.
He was trapped in his vehicle for a short time and had to be extricated by the Angola Fire Department.
Investigators say Mendez was then transported to a Fort Wayne hospital by Steuben County EMS for treatment of his injuries.
They said there was dense fog in the area at the time of the crash and alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
