AUBURN, Ind. (WFFT) -- "We've been kicking this can down the road for quite some time," says DeKalb County Sheriff David Cserep.
He says the problems with the county jail have only grown in years.
He says it's one of the oldest jails in the state, and it's in need of major work.
"Things are only getting worse, the taxpayer money is only getting worse," he says.
Cserep points to the jail elevator, something that is instrumental inside the jail that has been broken in the past.
It would cost tens of thousands of dollars to replace, but he says it would only patch up one of the problems in the short-term.
"It's not something we want to do, I'm a taxpayer and I live in this county," he says. "I don't want to spend money."
Cserep says he has felt like commissioners are on his side, and he is working with them to come up with a plan for the future, so they can work on keeping the department and citizens content with the work, at a reasonable cost.
