KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. (WFFT) - Kuhn Lake is along the Barbee Lake chain, much of which is flooded this Memorial Day weekend from recent weather events.
In response, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources restricted motorboat speed limits to that of 'idle only" to sustain the surrounding residential area.
The DNR placed idle speed restrictions in the following areas:
-Oswego Lake in Kosciusko County
-Knapp Lake in Noble County
-Indian Lakes chain in LaGrange County
-West Lakes chain of lakes in Noble County (Jones, Steinbarger, Tamarack, and Waldron)
-Barbee chain of lakes in Kosciusko County
-Tippecanoe and James (Little Tippecanoe) Lake in Kosciusko County
Indiana State Conservation Officer, Sergeant Ashlee Jackson, says, “There is water already entering dwellings of those houses. So the motorboat operation has been restricted to 'idle only' to try to eliminate some of the wake that could be hazardous for those dwellings.”
Many residents have weighted trash cans placed strategically along their piers to keep them from floating away.
But some are worried about Memorial Day weekend festivities, and if boaters will abide by the restrictions.
Jackson says, “On Memorial Day weekend, it’s kind of the kickoff to summer for a lot of people so we encourage everybody to just be responsible.”
