DACA deadline passes, but worry remains

Congress has yet to come up with an immigration solution for DACA giving dreamers a reprieve while the legal battle over the program plays out.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT)- Some people in Fort Wayne who are directly connected to this feel as as though they are no longer a priority.

Dreamers- young people brought to the U.S. illegally by their parents as children are shielded from deportation by the DACA program.

For most of them, the March 5th deadline is something they feared.

"Everybody has been nervous. 800,000 students, deserving students, Americans like anyone have been waiting exactly for the decision from congress, but not just congress a decision from the entire government," Max Montesino said.

Just because the deadline passed, it doesn't mean those who are affected are at ease.

Montesino and Brayan Castillo said it's a day by day process because anything could happen at this point.

"I think the biggest thing we can do to combat this issue is really educating ourselves, pushing, just working hard, and just prove to people who don't think DACA is helpful to the U.S. we are beneficial to the country, and that I would consider us Americans. We've all lived here all of our lives," Castillo said.

The DACA fix bill approved by the Indiana House adds more concern for Castillo.

The bill blocks DACA recipients from obtaining licenses for dozens of professions.

"It affects me personally because I'm a certified pharmacy technician in the state of Indiana, and so right now my license is good until this summer, so it does affect me in a negative way because if I don't renew my technician license, I could potentially be unemployed at my current pharmacy," he said.

He like so many others consider America home and don't want to change that.

For now, Montesino and Castillo said they will continue to be a voice until a final decision is made.
