FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — Authorities are investigating after a toddler was taken to a local hospital and died shortly after arriving early Monday afternoon from suspected child abuse.
Detectives with the Fort Wayne Police Department are investigating after a 17-month-old boy was being transported from the 2700 block of Millbrook Drive to a local hospital in critical condition.
The boy, identified as Aiden Mishawn Clark of Fort Wayne, was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after arriving.
His cause of death was determined to be blunt force injuries to the chest and the manner of death is homicide.
Aiden is the 16th homicide in Allen County for 2021.
Police announced Wednesday morning that they arrested 27-year-old Shaquille Rowe in connection to Aiden's death.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Rowe called 911 Monday and told dispatchers that Aiden was not breathing.
Rowe is the boyfriend of Jasmine Clark, who is Aiden's mother.
Rowe allegedly said he heard crying while he was in the shower and when he got out Rowe saw the child wasn't breathing and began CPR.
When officers arrived at the apartment on Millbrook Drive, they took over before the fire department and EMS made it to the home in order to take the child to Lutheran Hospital.
Court documents report that medics say they noticed signs of abuse on Aiden after they noticed bruising around his neck and chest, leading FWPD to investigate possible child abuse.
The coroner's office reported that the child most likely died from his injuries within 5 minutes.
Rowe was arrested Wednesday on preliminary charges of battery to a minor causing death and neglect of a dependent resulting in death.
This incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
