FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — The Allen County Coroner’s Office identified the man who was shot and killed early Wednesday morning in Fort Wayne.
Just after 1 a.m. Wednesday, officers with the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the intersection of Spring Street and Franklin Avenue in connection to a person armed with a gun.
The person who called 911 reported to Allen County dispatchers that a man went inside a residence in the area and fired a gun.
Officers say when to the area they were directed to a home in the 1600 block of Franklin Avenue.
Police say when they went inside a man was found with an apparent gunshot wound.
The victim, identified as 37-year-old William H. Erhardt of Fort Wayne, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The coroner determined Erhardt's cause of death is a gunshot wound to the chest and the manner of death is homicide.
Detectives arrested 37-year old John Lloyd Vires in connection to Erhardt's shooting death.
Erhardt is the 29th homicide in Allen County for 2021.
This shooting remains under investigation by authorities in Allen County.
