COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (WFFT) — The Indiana State Police is investigating a single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Columbia City man Monday morning.
Around 7:15 a.m., ISP responded to a reported vehicle crash on Old Trail Road just east of County Road 300 East, northeast of Columbia City in Whitley County.
Shortly after arriving on the scene the officer said he found a Ford car that was turned over on the south edge of the road with two people inside that were seriously injured.
Fire rescue were able to get the adult male driver out of the car.
He was flown by Samaritan helicopter in serious condition to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
The adult male passenger, however, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Whitley County Coroner.
Investigators say the driver had passed another vehicle while in a no-passing zone.
They say the driver lost control of the car and crashed into a tree on the south side of the road.
Police say both men were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
The victim of the crash was identified as 23-year-old Dakota Lee Messmann of Columbia City.
Messmann’s immediate family members have been notified of his death.
This crash is still under investigation.
