FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) -- Four long-time friends from southeast Fort Wayne are making it their mission to bring healthier food to neighborhoods where there is a large need.
“Our motto is: stay peaceful. Whether that be with your nutrition, in everyday life,” Wayne Kelly said.
Kelly and his best friends grew up dreaming of shooting hoops for the NBA — and making their hometown proud.
Now, they're doing so in a different way.
“I’m all about giving back. I feel like that’s one of the ways we can give back is bringing something healthy to the community,” Donte Bowen said.
Bowen is one of the co-owners of the smoothie business Peaceful Blendz.
The southeast side of Fort Wayne is known as a food desert — meaning it's an area where it’s difficult to buy affordable or quality fresh food.
“We think a lot of healing is needed in our city. So with the name Peaceful Blendz. we wanna improvise on that and represent a greater mission in Fort Wayne,” Kelly said.
The southeast side is predominantly Black and Latino — communities that Kelly says often are overlooked and neglected.
“We need to do our part at least to make it better although this is a small start we’re trying to make it bigger in the future,” he said.
It’s been two years of walking around town with a cooler and selling their fruity concoctions to thirsty pedestrians.
Their goal is to get a brick and mortar.
“We tryna be everywhere. Yessir, everywhere,” Bowen said.
