FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) -- An early morning car crash left staff at The Oyster Bar scratching their heads Wednesday.
Their outdoor patio looks like it was struck by a tornado.
Owner Steve Gard says this is the second time in his over 30 years that this has happened. This damage, however, is far worse.
“A big giant mess,” Vendor Sam Linsmeyer said.
Linsmeyer was delivering produce to the restaurant when he saw the scene.
“They took out the iron fencing over here. They took out trees up in front of it too. There’s oil all over the place,” he said.
The crash happened at around 5:20 a.m. in front of 1830 S. Calhoun Street.
“I just noticed a tree down and a trail of destruction. That’s when we looked at the footage,” John Battell said.
Battell works across the street at Sanco Industries.
Their security cameras caught the action.
“There was just stuff flying everywhere,” he said.
Battell is clueless as to what caused the crash.
“He got out of the car and looked a little discombobulated. I don’t know. It’s hard to say.”
But Owner Steve Gard has some theories.
“One of two things happened. He wasn’t drunk. He was on his cell phone or he fell asleep,” Gard said.
The Oyster Bar staff is ultimately happy no one was hurt. Although no one was physically injured, they're worried about the financial ramifications.
“We’re gonna lose business because we can’t seat anybody out there. I mean, we won’t be able to seat that I would hope not for the whole summer but at least a month or month and a half,” Gard said.
FOX 55 contacted the Fort Wayne Police Department for information on the suspect and details on the incident -- there was nothing available at this time.
