FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT)-The danger of alcohol abuse goes beyond college kids getting too drunk at parties.
Maybe it's your next door neighbor, or your friend who can never turn down a party invite because they know someone will buy a round of shots.
The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Inc. said more than half of all adults have a family history of alcoholism, and more than seven million children live in a household where at least one parent is dependent on alcohol.
"Right now in Fort Wayne, Indiana we are battling a big crisis and it has to do with alcoholism and drug use. a lot of people have a struggle with the dual diagnosis of the drug addiction and alcoholism," House Manager of Inspiration House Claire Stalter said.
April is Alcohol Awareness Month and many people around us even the ones we least expect could be battling with alcoholism.
"Approximately 15 million people struggle with alcohol use disorder and less than 8% of those people actually receive treatment, and about 6 people die everyday from alcohol poisoning," she explained.
The Inspiration House on Taber Street in Fort Wayne is here to prevent that from happening.
They provide addiction services underneath their parent company STAR Care Services.
There's group therapy and individual therapy all to provide the tools to help people get their lives on track.
"When they do move out of Inspiration House, we do want them to feel more comfortable if they walk past a liquor store or see somebody from their past life," Stalter added.
The first step is wanting the help for yourself.
"We always tell everyone who walks in this door, this is your time. You can be selfish. It's your time to focus on your sobriety," Stalter said.
If you know someone who may be dealing with alcoholism or addiction, the Inspiration House's phone number is 260-702-0925.
