FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) -- Meijer, Ayers Community Outreach program and several community members teamed for a turkey giveaway at the Allen County Public Library, Pontiac branch.
Organizers hosted the giveaway in place of the LeRoy Page Thanksgiving dinner that would've celebrated its 22nd year of providing meals to Fort Wayne families during the holiday season.
"I know this is going to help someone in some kind of way," said Mel Johnson, lead organizer and friend of the late LeRoy Page.
The giveaway started at 1 p.m., but Johnson says families were at the library hours before start time, some waiting in their cars or forming a line outside.
Volunteers eventually ran out of the 200 turkeys supplied for the giveaway.
But Johnson says he and the partnering programs aim to set another date and provide more meals during the holiday season when families want to celebrate with a warm dinner.
