FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — The Allen County Coroner's Office has identified the woman who was killed in a mass shooting at an apartment complex over the weekend.
Officers with the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to reports of gunshots in the rear parking lot of the Villages of Hanna Apartments in the 1300 block of Greene Street at 12:41 a.m. Saturday.
As they were checking all of the surrounding apartment buildings that were hit by gunfire they found four women wounded in various apartment buildings.
The coroner identified the victim as 29-year-old Candiace Marie Lay of Fort Wayne.
Lay was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition by medics where she later died.
Her cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound of the head and the manner of death is homicide.
Lay is the 17th homicide in Allen County for 2021.
A second woman remains in critical condition and two more are in good condition, according to police.
FWPD later said a fifth person was shot, he was identified as 20-year-old Jamarion Thomas, who was also in good condition.
Thomas was arrested Saturday morning as a suspect in the shooting.
The incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
