FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) -- After 20 years serving as the Allen County Health Commissioner, Dr. Deborah McMahan is announcing plans for retirement this year.
She made the announcement Monday evening at the Executive Health Board meeting.
She plans to step away in June but will remain there part-time for a short period to help with the transition for a new health commissioner.
"I've been fortunate to have great staff, a great board, great community partners, but for some family and health reasons, it's time to go and let somebody else come in and take over some of these issues," Dr. McMahan explained.
McMahan was appointed Health Commissioner in May 2000.
During her tenure, she lead successful responses to numerous disease outbreaks such as the H1N1 influenza pandemic and Hepatitis A outbreaks.
