FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT)- When residents at a Canterbury Green apartment building woke up Thursday morning, they never expected to be evacuated, but an early morning fire pushed them out. Now, they're dealing with the aftermath.

"I never had, like, fire in my life, so I thought that it was just a tiny, tiny fire alarm that went bad or something," said Yeisol Woo.

Woo was among the residents that was evacuated from her apartment. She woke up to pounds on her door.

"He was saying that, 'You have to get out right now." I didn't grab enough things to get out of the building, and then once I got out, the fire was already, like, starting really bad, Woo said.

Woo is grateful she made it out safely, but she's worried about what will happen next.

"I'm really worried about my apartment because right now I don't know how bad it is," Woo said.

Larry Culp lives at the end of the building. His apartment sustained some damage. but he's grateful the fire department reacted so quickly to the blaze.

"Fort Wayne Fire Department was here very quickly, they responded very well, and everybody got out safely, so we're thankful for that," Culp said.

Assistant Fire Chief, Paul Veldman, said crews were stretched thin Thursday as a result of not only the Canterbury fire, but two other blazes that were reported around the city.

"We had another fire going on on Lake and Forest Park Boulevard, so it's stretching our resources initially, and as it's wrapping up we have another fire going on on South Park, so it's been a busy morning," Veldman said.

Some residents were able to go back into their apartments a few hours after the blaze to grab essential items. They said with help from the Red Cross and the complex they'll be relocated.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
