BERNE, Ind. (WFFT) — Police say a young girl is dead after a highway car crash in southern Adams County while trying to cross the street with other children Friday afternoon.
Shortly after noon Friday, first responders in Adams County were called to the intersection of U.S. Highway 27 and West County Road 350 South in Monroe Township, just north of Berne for a crash where a child was unresponsive.
Indiana State Police say medics at the scene tried to perform CPR on the girl, but remained unresponsive and was immediately transported to the Adams County Memorial Hospital in Decatur, where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators say the victim, identified as 4-year-old Barbara JC Graber of Berne, and two other Amish children were running across U.S. 27 as 82-year-old Wayne Foust, of Berne was driving south on the road.
Police said Barbara was hit by Foust's car and critically injured, the other two children were not injured.
The children were attending an Amish wedding ceremony at a home located on the northeast corner of the intersection and were crossing the street to where the wedding reception was being held.
ISP says Foust is cooperating with authorities as they continue their investigation.
They don't believe alcohol or drugs are contributing factors to the crash.
