FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — Police say a man who is suspected of driving while drunk is behind bars and a driver he crashed into is in the hospital after leading officers on a short chase and crashing shortly after he sped away late Friday night.
Just after 11:30 p.m. an officer with the Fort Wayne Police Department reported that a car was speeding down Washington Center Road with his radar.
Police say the driver refused to stop after officers tried to pull him over beginning a brief chase.
Officers say the chase lasted less than 30 seconds after they lost sight of the driver near Progress Road because he was driving so fast.
FWPD says calls began coming into Allen County dispatchers about the crash involving the same car less than one minute after the chase ended at the intersection of Lima and Washington Center roads as the calls were coming in.
After the crash, police say a woman was pinned inside her vehicle on Washington Center Road and the driver who led officers on a chase was taken into custody.
That victim was taken from the scene to a local hospital where she is said to have life-threatening injuries and later died.
FWPD arrested 26-year-old Alexander Delaney of Utica, New York.
He is facing preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement in a vehicle, OWI causing catastrophic injury and criminal recklessness.
Detectives say additional charges may be added and believe alcohol and excessive speed are factors in this crash.
Lima and Washington Center roads had traffic delays for several hours as investigators worked to gather information at the scene.
Correction: The woman involved was the driver of the vehicle that was hit by 26-year-old Alexander Delaney during the crash. She was not a passenger in Delaney's vehicle.
