CLEAR LAKE, Ind. (WFFT) — A motorcyclist in Steuben County is dead after police say he went off the road for an unknown reason and crashed Sunday evening.
Just after 6:30 p.m., Steuben County First Responders were called to the area of County Road 700 North and County Road 925 East in Steuben County's rural Clear Lake Township on a report of a motorcycle accident.
When they arrived, Steuben County deputies found 48-year-old Kenneth Byrd of Fremont partly under a motorcycle.
Deputies say Emergency personnel removed Byrd from under the motorcycle and started treating Byrd.
While Byrd at the scene, he died his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Steuben County Coroner's Office.
Deputies believe that Byrd was riding fast southbound on C.R. 925 E on his motorcycle when he traveled off the road.
After he left the road they said Byrd hit a wooden post, small brush and then a large stack of firewood.
Deputies say Byrd was not wearing a helmet and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
Investigators say the weather and road conditions were clear at the time of the crash.
The crash is still under investigation by the Sheriff's Office.
