ROANOKE, Ind. (WFFT) - The United Auto Workers still haven't reached a new contract with General Motors, forcing the current national strike into day 9.

About 49,000 workers across the country went on strike Sept. 16 at GM facilities in nine states, including about 4,000 people at the Fort Wayne Assembly plant.

Workers on the picket line Monday said the strike is worth it, no matter how long it goes.

"No one wants to strike and interrupt their lives," said Linda Albin. "I kind of thought we would've worked things out earlier."

Albin has worked at GM for three years, all as a temporary worker.

She said standing the picket lines is worth it.

"If we get things ironed out, I will have a permanent position. That's what a lot of are shooting for," Albin said.

Albin is one of about 700 temps working at the Fort Wayne plant, which is a sticking point in the contract negotiations.

"It's important for me because there are no jobs in my town so it's a long drive for me. I mean there are no jobs that are comparable to this," she said.

On top of being a temp, Albin drives 66 miles, one way, to work at the GM truck assembly from Logansport.

"There's a feeling of brotherhood here. These are your brothers and sisters. When one of us struggles with something, the others will band together and help them out," Albin said.

"Most people here just want their fair shake," said Chris Ailes.

This is the second time Chris Ailes has been on strike in the 25 years he's worked at GM.

"Everybody's got to learn you've got to stand up and stand your ground or you'll fall for anything," he said.

Albin said she's looking forward to being able to go back to work.

If we get this ironed out, a lot of us temps will have a job," said Albin.

It's not clear when the strike will be over.

The UAW said negotiations with GM are slowly making progress.

The last strike against GM in 2007 only lasted two days.

The Allen County Sheriff's Department said they are being called to the picket lines a few times a day, but things have been relatively calm.

A spokesman told FOX 55 no one has been hurt and no one's been arrested during the first eight days of the strike.
