An Ashland man who was wanted on several outstanding warrants was arrested Tuesday evening in Jefferson County.

The man -- 47-year-old Anthony Scott Marler -- also happens to be the suspect wanted by authorities in Baldwin County. They say Marler rammed a police cruiser with a stolen pickup truck he was driving.

That incident happened during a traffic stop Wednesday evening, Dec. 6, in Summerdale. The police car was seriously damaged, and Marler managed to elude officers, police said.

Marler also was wanted on outstanding warrants that included a parole violation.

He was captured Tuesday evening in north Jefferson County.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, on Tuesday deputies received information that a stolen truck was located at a residence in the 800 block of Lower Coalburg Road. Deputies went to the home and found the truck. They verified that it had been reported stolen to the Moody Police Department.

After checking the truck, they went to the door of the residence and found the door had been damaged and was partially open, according to the Sheriff's Office. JCSO went on to say that deputies called out to the occupants and a male voice responded with "hey."

However, once they identified themselves as deputies the man quit responding. Deputies entered the home and found Marler sitting in a chair.

He was asked to stand up and when he did so, the key to the stolen vehicle fell from his lap, according to the Sheriff's Office.

He was then taken into custody.

Deputies say they found a short-barreled shotgun laying in the chair where he had been seated.

The homeowner arrived and told deputies that Marler was a family friend and that he was allowed to be inside the home.

Marler was arrested and taken to the Jefferson County Jail, where he was also be charged with receiving stolen property and possession of a short barreled shotgun. He remains in jail with no bond, the Sheriff's Office said.

After the arrest, deputies learned that Marler had been the subject of a statewide search by the United States Marshals after he backed into a patrol car and exchanged gunfire with officers in south Alabama after being stopped in a different stolen vehicle.

Marler had reportedly told family members that he had cancer and, if confronted by law enforcement, he was going to shoot it out because he was dying anyway, according to JCSO.
