Locally Made Monday: Indiana Grown

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — You've seen many businesses and people featured here on Locally Made Monday.

Whether it's a sauce maker, a mobile bakery, or a seed oil maker.

One thing that ties them all together is they've seen their businesses boom because of the Indiana Grown initiative.

Indiana Grown brings local products from the farm to your dinner table.

Spices, sunflower oil, bread and pasta, sauces and mustards- all of these local products have seen their sales shoot sky-high because of the Indiana Department of Agriculture's Program- Indiana Grown.

"So, that is traditional row crops, hog farming, distilleries, wineries, breweries, you name it. We like to promote those agricultural products, and help them gain entry into the marketplace if they want," says Indiana Grown membership development program director Heather Tallman.

You've seen many Indiana Grown members right here in northeast Indiana.

"We have members in your area, like Best Boy and Company. They've taken a small concept, and he's kind of a one-man operation. He had these great recipes, and he's grown this into a national brand... And we have Brick House Pasta in Fort Wayne as well. She has taken a concept that has been really successful at the farmers' market level, and now she's finding a retail placement," Tallman says.

The initiative itself is a recent creation.

"Indiana Grown is in its third year. We're getting ready to approach our third year...At the beginning of the year, we were hovering around five hundred members. And right now, we're right about nine hundred and eighteen. So we're definitely on course to reach a thousand members before the end of the year," Tallman says.

Tallman says while these growers and creators are excellent at what they do, they often don't know the best way to share their story with Hoosiers like you.

"There's no one better to tell their story than the artisan or the farmer or the person making that wine and beer. We want them to tell their story, but we're going to come around in the background to help them with that marketing piece," Tallman says.
