"The more prevention work that we do, the more people get involved as a community, the less likely cases of child abuse and neglect," said De Szyndrowski, CEO of SCAN.

April is child abuse and awareness month.

Communities across the country are planting pinwheel gardens like this one at the Summit to raise awareness to the growing issue.

"I think a pinwheel just signifies a child, healthy, happy safe child," said Szyndrowski.

Just this year in Fort Wayne, a 2-month-old and a 5-year-old were killed and a 5-month old was induced in a comma.

Julio Carrillo,19, and Dakota Moran, 21, are charged with child abuse and neglect.

"How can we eliminate the stigma of reaching out for help as a bad thing? Some of these deaths I think absolutely could've been prevented," Szyndrowski.

Szyndrowski said scan is already working with other service providers, police and hospitals.

"Trying to do better education. Really creating an all out plan and effort of what can we do better," she said.

Allen County judge Charles Pratt sees many of these cases.

He said there have been more than 800 new cases of child abuse filed in Allen County so far this year.

"My mission in life is to close the doors of SCAN because we have no more child abuse and neglect,"Szyndrowski

If you or someone you know needs help call the Indiana Department of Children Services.
