FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT)- Railroad conductors and engineers are on call 24/7, rain or shine, but they call the job rewarding.

Thursday night we told you Norkfolk Southern is hiring 65 new conductors at about $46,000 a year. They have to be 18 years old, and the company will train you for the job. There's also opportunity to move up. On board the train, FOX 55 found out what to expect.

Cory Cerna is a conductor, and said the railroad is never the same, but that's why he likes it.

"I like working outside, not sitting behind a desk for 10 hours, 8 hours," he said.

Conductors sit next to the engineers inside the train to help keep things moving. Savannah Kruckenberg started as a conductor 11 years ago, but now she's an engineer and in charge of everything, including the whistle.

"You're in control of a lot. You have to think about five different things at one point in time, what the rear end of the train is doing. You got a lot of controls in front of you. You have to make sure they're all in the right position," she said.

Kruckenberg said while the railroad is challenging and demands her to be on call all the time, it also takes her to new places.

"You get to travel. Stay in different cities and hotels, turn around and come back home the next day. It's a lot of fun," she said.

Aaron Sherman, the terminal superintendent, said if you're considering a line of work that gets the wheels turning both mentally and physically, the railroad might be the place for you.

"For somebody that's willing to give it a shot it's a great career opportunity," he said.
